How God Directs Our Lives
Does God direct our lives? Certainly He does, according to our choices. He never does anything randomly or capriciously.
God has a plan; and we can either follow His plan or chart our own course. Does He allow us to go our own way if we want? He does. The first great commandment is to love the Lord thy God; however, love that is forced is not love at all, so our God allows us to choose. What happens if a stubborn child refuses to walk with his parent? The parent has to either drag him along or leave him behind. God doesn’t make us love Him, evident by the masses who do not.
Also consider that even angels were able to choose, at least in the beginning. That’s how Lucifer and a third of them fell. Their choice. See where they are now (Jude 6).
Knowing the end of all things from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10),
God directs our lives according to our choices.
In Romans 1, God spells out the process, stating that the righteousness of God is revealed “from faith to faith.” Take one step of faith, and there will be another step, and so it goes. But for those who refuse to walk, they chart their own dangerous path.
The ungodly, detailed in Romans 1, refuse God and choose all kinds of wickedness, including vile affections and “strange flesh” as spoken regarding Sodom and Gomorrah (Jude 7), which God destroyed. People these days have corrupted further by not only choosing strange flesh but changing their flesh! What must God think of that!
He actually says what He thinks: “It shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment” than for them (Mark 6:11). “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God “gave them up” and “gave them over” (vv. 24, 26, 28) to their own chosen way.
However—a big however—to those who choose God, the path is completely different. Life is different. The destination is different. What a wonderful life! He directs our lives for salvation, for a marriage partner, for a vocation or calling that will serve His purpose, and for so much more.
Does God determine the direction of all on Planet Earth (the planet created to house humanity, for those wondering about life on other planets)? Absolutely! He sees us, He knows us, and He works all things for our good and His glory if we choose Him (Romans 8:28). It's the only direction to go if things are to end well.
